Juneteenth

Celebrate Freedom... Juneteenth refers to the day 6/19/1865. 

Now a federal holiday, it commemorates a major event in American history that we should all be familiar with. Here are some great things you should know...

  1. It’s also known as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, and Black Independence Day.
  2. It's the oldest known holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S.
  3. There is a Juneteenth Flag of Freedom. It is half red and half blue with a star in the middle. 
  4. A group of former slaves polled $800 together to purchase 10 acres of land and created Emancipation Park to host future Juneteenth celebrations in modern-day Houston.
