Now a federal holiday, it commemorates a major event in American history that we should all be familiar with. Here are some great things you should know...
- It’s also known as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, and Black Independence Day.
- It's the oldest known holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S.
- There is a Juneteenth Flag of Freedom. It is half red and half blue with a star in the middle.
- A group of former slaves polled $800 together to purchase 10 acres of land and created Emancipation Park to host future Juneteenth celebrations in modern-day Houston.
