Summer Solstice - Fun Facts

Also known as midsummer, summer solstice usually occurs annually June 20-22 in the Northern hemisphere and December 20-23 in the Southern Hemisphere.  The same dates in opposite are referred to as the Winter Solstice. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, this year summer solstice occurs on June 21, 2019.

Summer Solstice occurs when the geographical pole (North or South) is most greatly tilted toward the sun. On this day, the sun reaches the highest point in the sky and lingers the longest, ie the longest day of the year. It is often referred as a tipping point in the year.  From here on, the days get shorter until the Winter Solstice.

The significance varies among cultures.  Some celebrate the event as a time of renewed energy and great potential.  Traditions include feasts, bonfires, picnics and traditional songs and dances.

Enjoy the extra Sunshine!
