Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over invading French forces during the Battle of Puebla.

Often confused with Mexican Independence Day, the most important national holiday in Mexico, which is celebrated on September 16. The holiday celebrates a much smaller military victory. However, the triumph over the better equipped and more numerous French troops was a significant morale boost for the Mexican people at large and helped establish a sense of national unity and patriotism.

Cinco de Mayo has roots in Mexico, but it's become more widely celebrated in the US as a way to honor Mexican culture and heritage.

Viva Mexico! Salud!
